ARTISTIC WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN EDINBURGH

We’ve been big fans of Melody Joy Co‘s artistic wedding photography style for a while, so we were (selfishly, you may say) thrilled when she moved from Chicago to Edinburgh. Here, we chat to her about not only her artistic wedding photography, but her style, her inspiration, and what she’s loving, too.

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

Hi! I’m Melody, Joy is my middle name, and I’m a wedding + editorial photographer located in Edinburgh, Scotland!

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.

My workplace is anywhere in the world where someone wants to get married. I’ve shot weddings in multiple countries on beaches, courthouses, barns, estates, fields, lochs, boats, castles and churches. All of them are lovely and unique to each couples personality.

WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

It all began from my dad holding a camcorder on his shoulder for my entire childhood. Documenting moments was always his thing, and as soon as I could, I had every form of child camera to “izone” to “disposable” to “instax”, all the way to being in charge of documenting all of the events in University and using their DSLR cameras. So that is how I started my love of documentation, and then overtime I realised that as my friends started getting engaged and married and I started having the opportunity to capture those moments, they became the most meaningful to me.

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

My favourite work are the wedding days or brand shoots where the vibe is high fashion editorial or street fashion candid 80s and 90s vibes.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I’m inspired by architecture, fashion and cinema.

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY

My typical day is making coffee for my husband and I, heading to my living room, answering emails first and then edit all day. Unless I have a shoot or am meeting a client or friend for coffee during the afternoon! I try to wrap up my work by 5pm so I can spend time with my husband in the evenings. Gotta find that work life balance. I hustled hard in my early years though, so now I give myself more defined work lines for balance and being able to recharge and feel refreshed creatively.

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

I love a good coffee shop. Solid coffee and a cinnamon bun can make me so happy. Coffee shops are the first places I look for in any new city and country I visit. I usually google coffee shops for destination weddings before I even book my lodging.

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

I don’t have a particular wedding venue that is my favorite, but any venue that has good natural lighting is my favorite to work with. I love window light, so even in a dark space, my favorite portraits end up being the dynamic lighting by a window.

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON

I’m not sure about trends, but I love couples who choose unique wedding attire that is more of their personal vibe than the traditional one. Both minimal or maximalist, if it is well styled then it will look amazing.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN

You can be anything you want to be. – My Dad

Whether that is logistically true or not, it’s the encouraging environment of those around me that have given me the empowerment to keep going every day and keep living the dream of capturing beautiful moments for a living.
