supplier spotlight –  Meet Heather Snowie Make-Up Artist

28 July 2019

A SCOTTISH LOVE AFFAIR WITH HEATHER SNOWIE MAKE-UP ARTIST

Your make-up artist can be a huge part of your wedding day – much bigger than you may realise. Not only are they strongly correlated with how you’ll look in the photos you’ll treasure forever, they’re often the first supplier you’ll meet on the day, so you need to get someone you feel comfortable with. Heather Snowie Make Up Artist is 100% that gal – 1. she’s a supremely talented make-up artist with an illustrious career in film, TV and bridal make-up, but 2. she’s a ray of sunshine too. If you don’t believe us, just see below!

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

My name is Heather Snowie, I am a freelance makeup artist, originally from Toronto, Canada but now calling Scotland my home. I’ve been doing makeup for over 19 years and have never lost my passion for it!

The first time I moved to Scotland was in 2002, after a two week visit to the Highlands the year before. On that trip I completely fell in love with Scotland and knew I had to come back! I moved over to help open and work at the brand new MAC Cosmetics counter located in Edinburgh at Harvey Nichols. I stayed there for just over a year before moving back to Canada in 2003. I spent the next 13 years dreaming of moving back to Scotland. After 10 visit over the course of 13 years, and meeting the man of my dreams, I finally moved back in 2016!

I feel so at home here, and everyone I have been fortunate enough to meet, have been so kind and welcoming. I think I might never leave! I am based in Fife but happy to travel to any location in the UK and beyond.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.

I am a freelance artist so my workplace is where ever you would like it to be! I am happy to travel to your home, hotel or venue to get everyone makeup ready.

WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

I would ask my friends if I could do their makeup before our nights out, (which they all thankfully would agree!) but I quickly realised that if their eye shape was much different than my own, I wasn’t sure what to do! This lead me to sign up for a “special effects makeup artistry” course in Toronto where I learned all the basics and more.
I was fortunate enough to get a job with MAC Cosmetics before I finished college, which furthered my experience and hands on education. It was invaluable experience as I was able to hone my skills with people of all ages, sexes and races.

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

It’s hard to choose! I have been so fortunate to work with such incredible teams and amazing brides through the years! I have to say though the past year or so I have really been able to expand my creativity and produce some of the best work of my life! All of which you can find on my TWC profile, on both my websites or on Instagram.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I am inspired by the beauty of the individual sat in front of me first and foremost. I take inspiration from other artists and creatives around me, from fabric colours and textures being worn by the model or client, the flowers in a brides bouquet… etc. What inspires me is constantly changing as I continue to grow and evolve as an artist, and I hope that never stops.

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY

I don’t think I have a typical day ever! Ha ha! I have two other businesses with my husband (an Airbnb and a craft beer store, both located in Dunfermline) and a dog that keep me busy! It does always start with a cup of tea and often ends with a glass of wine! 😉

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

My husband and I have really taken a shining to Dunfermline. Maybe because of our businesses there but we can see the wonderful changes that are happening there and are excited for them. Not only doesn’t it have a beautiful public park and glen but it is so rich in history it blows me away!
My favourite places in all of Scotland though are tied between the Isle of Skye (I will never tire of its beauty!) and Edinburgh. Edinburgh will always have a special and magical place in my heart as my first home away from home.

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

Based on the ones I have had the privilege to visit so far, I would have to say Cambo Estate is my favourite. I love the unique venue style they offer and that they can accommodate so many of your party and guests. Unfortunately I don’t always get to see the venues as it all depends on where the bride is wishing to get ready.

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON

Oh goodness, where do I start! Ha ha!
I would say softer, more natural brows. I love a full brow, but am over the heavily penciled on and HD brows. Brows are meant to enhance your eyes not over power them.
I am loving these soft pinky tones that we are seeing on eyes, lips and cheeks so I hope that continues as well.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

“What’s for you, won’t go by you!”

Anyone who knows me knows what that phrase means to me! So much so I have it tattooed on my wrist as a daily reminder! I think it is a good mantra in all areas of our lives. It reminds us to not stress over the small things and that everything will work out one way or another, as it is meant to.
