OUT OF THIS WORLD FLORAL DESIGN

Ladies and lovelies, may we have your attention please – introducing the wonderful Sophie from Cosmos Floral Design! With a penchant for unusual and considered designs, a focus on seasonal Scottish flowers and a love of bright and bold colour, her floral arrangements will blow the cobwebs away, and then blow you away for good measure. We chatted to her below!

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

We are based in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland but regularly travel outside of the city to floral up weddings taking place outside the city in our wild, beautiful countryside.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.

Our studio is a shared workspace with other wedding suppliers, including a cake designer, wedding hair dresser, make-up artist and Photo Booth. As a result people are always coming and going, so it’s a pretty social atmosphere with a really creative vibe!

WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

When I was made redundant in 2010 from the florist shop I worked in, I decided to make the jump and start my own business. I started small, working from home and it’s slowly grown from there, now filling our beautiful studio in the Templeton building.

Now, as of 2019 I’m partnering up with a sister team of florists – Zoe and Tash Fraser – as the business grows from strength to strength. I have a degree in sculpture, and Zoe did her floral training in Sydney, Australia, while Tash has experience in upholstery and has a strong self-taught floral style.

We have a lot of exciting ideas we’re currently working on so watch this space!

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

We get to work on so many amazing events, from terrarium table centres to elopements by the hills of Glenshee but a particular favourite last year was the wedding of Katy and Ciaran. I have known Katy for a while now, we met through working with Lauren McGlynn, her photography business partner and sister in law! Having a personal connection to a couple always makes for a really exciting floral production.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

All three of us are inspired by multiple sources; interior design, Japanese floral design, the Dutch artists of the past like Jan Davidsz de Heem, and of course, nature itself.

Other florists are always a source of inspiration too, from the beautiful structural arrangements by German designer, Gregor Lersch to the amazing use of colour in Mexican florist, Leopoldo Gomez’s work.

In short, a little bit of everything!

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY

There’s no such thing for us but that’s where the excitement lies.

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

The beach, when it’s warm enough, or one of our numerous islands up North.

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

Variety is key. I genuinely can’t say we have a favourite venue! We always love working with other Wedding Collective suppliers.

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON?

We’d love to see a push towards more locally sourced flowers, we have some great lovely growers around Scotland that deserve more attention.

Our current favourite thing are circular moon gates with sprawling foraged materials. So if that’s up your street, hit us up!

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

“The grass is greener where you water it.”
