SHETLAND SOUL WITH A GLASGOW POSTCODE.
A lot of people think wedding planners have got to be cutthroat, cold and corporate to cut through the crap of wedding planning – but Cat is testament to the fact that your wedding planner should instead be a super lovely cheerleader on your team. Sure, she has a corporate events background and she’s a genius at getting stuff done and done well, but she’s the warmest, chattiest woman in the biz. Whether you’re looking for help a couple of years in advance, or just on the day itself, she’s the wingwoman you want when the going gets slightly too much. We chatted to her about Fin Flükra life!
WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
Hi there! I’m Cat, the founder and Chief Wedding Planner extraordinaire of Fin Flükra based near Glasgow.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.
I work from home. Home being in a converted church which I adore! As our flat is up in the roof area, which means LOTS of sloping ceilings and having to be creative in how we use the space.
My desk is tucked away in a corner and I pretty much touch the ceiling when I stand up… I’m only 5ft 2in so I would describe it as cosy 🙂
WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
My boyfriend (now husband) turned to me whilst walking along the beach in Nairn and said… ‘what about wedding planning?’. The seed was planted and I never looked back!
DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY
Tea with custard cream biscuits, emails, seating plans, researching suppliers/venues, site visits, emails, updating social media, meetings with couples or suppliers, more tea and custard cream biscuits, timelines, design briefs, calls and so on… there’s no such thing as a typical day in my job and I love the variety it brings!
For example on a wedding day itself I can easily cover on average 10 miles over a 12-14 hour day ensuring everything is exactly as planned. As one of my brides called me – a wedding ninja! I’ll take that 🙂
WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?
The Rock – aka my homeland, Shetland. It’s the inspiration behind my business name and a truly breathtaking and magical place. It’s food for my soul going back there.
FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?
It has to be Lunga House near Croabh Haven in the west coast of Scotland. Why? Because it’s where I got married myself in 2015!
I fell in love with the place before I had even visited! Its motto ‘Little Castle, Big Heart’ sums it up perfectly.
TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON
You do you. It’s really as simple as that really.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
An old boss once said to me ‘feel the fear and do it anyway.’
It really stuck with me and whenever I’m having a moment of doubt it’s what spurs me forward toward the unknown!
