CREATIVE, RELAXED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY WITH DESIGN-LED FOCUS

To put it mildly, Claire Fleck is a massive babe. Her photography is relaxed yet focused, and intimate yet open (she’s a wizard!). Laser cutting led her to wedding photography (not the usual trajectory, granted, but we love a unique story) which means all of her documentary style shots are super design-led and perfectly placed to tell your love story in the most beautiful way possible. As at home in a big outdoors wedding as she is in an inner city London wedding, she’ll seek out all the details that will bring you right back to the day again and again, whilst being a really lovely and relaxing presence on the day. Told you she was a babe!

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

Hello! I’m Claire Oommen, but no one can remember how to spell that so I stick to my maiden name Claire Fleck. I’m based in Edinburgh but I’m regularly down in London and travelling around the country.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE

I’ve just set up an office in our new little house although it’s slowly turning in to a greenhouse for my plant purchases. Some days I get out and about to some of my favourite coffee shops to mix it up a bit and other days I keep other creative friends on Skype all day to make it feel like we’re not working alone.

WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

After I finished a degree in Costume and Set design I ran a small laser cutting business for two years which led to wedding decorating which led to wedding photography! I’ve now been doing this for the past 4 years and totally love it.

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

Oooh, no! I can’t answer that, I’ve had so many favourites. Every wedding is so different and I come away saying it’s my new favourite.

There was the one where there was a thunder storm all day long but everyone just mucked in and we had so much fun, the one where the reception was in my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh and I got to eat alongside the guests or the one where two of my best mates got married and we went to a coffee shop straight after the ceremony to hang out and take some photos- that was definitely a highlight for me.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I spend a lot of time looking at painters, other photographers, nature and even architecture to see how light is used and effects its surroundings and this feeds a lot into the way I work. I get my energy from people so I’m always so inspired to shoot people when they’re totally being themselves. Happy, relaxed and trusting people help me to take risks and come up with ideas I wouldn’t normally have the space for.

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY

I try to work the normal 9-5 so that I can spend my evenings with friends. That doesn’t stop me occasionally heading out for a coffee and a bagel, visiting street auctions and local independent shops or heading out of the city to paddle board or wander around the countryside.

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

It totally depends what mood I’m in. I really like finding new spots so I rarely return to the same place over and over again unless it’s really good. In the city, anywhere that sells good gin or pizza will win my heart and out of town I love being by the sea.

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

I have so many…I always think it’s really cool when people are able to get married at home in their garden/barn or a tent. I got married at The Cow Shed so I’m a bit bias but I absolutely love that place, as well as Guardswell Farm and Cambo Estate. City favourites include Timberyard, The Glue Factory and BAAD in Glasgow- all the goodness of the outdoors but with the safety of a roof over your head!

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON

People doing whatever they want! No rules, no ‘wedding’ colour schemes, no tradition for the sake of tradition. Just loads of fun.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN

I’ve got a huge print by Anthony Burrill in my office that says: Work hard and be nice to people. It’s so simple but works every time.
