supplier spotlight –  Meet STACEY STEWART MAKE-UP ARTISTRY

29 July 2018

BRIDAL MAKE-UP WITH A BANG.

Stacey Stewart is a gal after our own heart. She’s also (luckily for you guys) a super-talented make up artist bringing something fresh and dynamic and exciting to the wedding make-up game. Stacey approaches bridal make up as a collaboration with each bride, meaning every look is different, but as gorgeous as the last. Her sleek editorial inspiration is abundant in her work, and she’s been featured in Wonderland – but don’t worry, she’s totally lovely, as she pines over Solange Knowles’ wedding just as much as we do, and she’s relatable too – her passion for make-up started with sooty eyeliner and blusher in school bathrooms, just like we used to. It’s just, you know, she’s BLOODY good at it…

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

I am a freelance Makeup Artist based in North East Scotland. Being freelance really gives me the freedom to travel to wherever a job may take me, I’ve worked all over the UK – this is one of the many aspects of my life that I love! The freedom and ever changing environment appeals to my little wandering soul.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.

My workplace is really me and my kit bag. We’ve been everywhere together, trains, planes, automobiles…horse and cart! I feel a bit lost without my kit bags and together we’ve seen the inside of some of the most beautiful wedding venues, backstage at London Fashion Week, countless studios and up hills in the highlands!

When I’m not working out of my kit bags my other workplace is as a Tutor at The Academy of Makeup in Aberdeen and Glasgow. I couldn’t imagine a more creative or supportive place to work or family to be a part of.

WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

It all began a very long time ago in school bathrooms with my love affair of blusher and sooty black eyeliner.
Ever since then it was an underlying current that steadily grew into realising that blusher could actually be a job, something I hadn’t really thought it could be! After training quite some time ago now, makeup went from being an underlying current to an all out mission, and I’ve never looked back! I’m very much a forward thinker. I’m focused on what’s happening tomorrow rather than what happened yesterday and it’s the same approach I bring to my makeup.

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

Every bride I have worked with has asked for something different of me, which in turn has brought out a different aspect of me as an artist. That makes each bride I work with a favourite, because we’ve created something new and unique together and I’m very proud of that.  Then I have the first photoshoot I ever worked on straight out of training which in turn was published in Wonderland Magazine – that will always be a favourite because I was brand new and I had followed Wonderland for so long.

London Fashion Week will always have that affect on me because it was the first goal I ever set myself as an artist.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Trailblazers.Seeing anyone excel and strive to do more and better than they did yesterday really inspires me. In their line of work, daily life or just in how they carry themselves. That fearless nature and not being scared that it might go wrong…or that it may just be great. It’s something I recognise in all of the artists and people who I truly admire.

The world is so filled with inspiration, in nature, architecture, colour, texture. It’s all crammed into our tiny planet and inspiring in its own!

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY

My days vary so much from one to the next! I can be on location for 5 days shooting a commercial job, teaching at The Academy, on a bride’s wedding day filled with such a happy atmosphere or in a studio shooting an editorial. It’s this variety that really keeps me excited about what I do!
On a “day off” I catch up on emails, mood board new shoot concepts, zone out by creating face charts for looks I’m dreaming up and hang out with my niece and nephew. I’m biased, but they are the best two humans I know!

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

I love busy cities and fast paced chaos where everyone looks like their running late and just sitting watching the world go by. On the opposite end, I love wandering around galleries and museums where the pace is completely slowed down, everyone is in their own world and it’s complete silence!

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

I’ve worked in such a range of beautiful venues. I do love that more and more couples are choosing to have a more laidback, personal approach to venues and venue dressing. I really love when you meet a bride and you can completely match their personally to the venue. It’s all a lovey part of their story. Outdoor settings are a personal favourite and I’m praying for a bride who chooses a vineyard – what a beautiful setting!

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON

I like that we’re seeing a “personal style” approach to bridal and excited to see where that goes.
Brides or bridesmaids who wear beautifully tailored suits, chunky hair pins and statement metallic kirby grips. Minimalist liner in a bold colour, glowing, fresh skin with freckles and fluffy brows. Solange Knowles’ entire wedding from her styling to the photography is my dream!

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN

Stay focused, open and true.
Makeup is ever changing as is the industry and its important for me to always stay true to myself and my client. I think makeup should be inclusive and fun and a source of happiness for people.
Makeup doesn’t discriminate and that’s a truly amazing thing.
