WHERE DREAMY COLOUR PALETTES AND OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD TEXTURES MEET.
Meet Cosmos Floral Design, run by Sophie Wilson. You’ll know her and already love her as I Heart Flowers, a beautiful bastion of all things gorgeous and floral for a wee while now, but she’s back with a bang and a brand new name. Known for her inspired curation of wild and wonderful textures in breathtaking colour ways, her florals look as at home in a fine art painting as they do nestled in an industrial warehouse wedding. Botanical, unstructured, and downright bloody gorgeous, all of Sophie’s arrangements are inspired and unique, whilst all connected by her charm and trademark style.
WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
Cosmos Floral Design (formerly I Heart Flowers) is run by Sophie Wilson. We’ve rebranded and are now named Cosmos Floral Design. After 7 years of flowering it felt like time for a shake up, change of name and freshen up of everything. We’re excited to have a cool new look for this year! Cosmos is based in Glasgow, but travel Scotland wide with our flowers.
When not flowering, Sophie likes to spend her time exploring the city, scouring instagram for quirky fashion ideas, and eating at the latest street food or pop up foodie places. She also loves a good sci-fi movie.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE
We have a lovely open plan, loft-style studio in the old Templeton Carpet Factory building, just off Glasgow Green. We share the space with a few other wedding businesses, including The Wedding Collective’s own Cat Robertson Makeup, and Bygone Photo Booth!
WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
Back in 2007, I started a part-time floristry course at one of the local colleges thinking it would be a fun hobby. After doing a bit of work for other florists I then realised I wanted to do it professionally, and I Heart Flowers was born in 2010. I quit my day job in 2013 to go full time with the flowers, which was a really exciting day! I’d never enjoyed working the usual 9-5 and it’s been an amazing journey running the business and meeting lots of other incredible and inspiring small business owners and designers along the way.
FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?
There are so many jobs I’ve loved working on! One that stands out from last year was a gorgeous wedding at Killearn Village Hall where our couple asked us to do some lovely little touches through the designs. We kept it simple with a mostly white and green palette with accents of gold (as it was autumn); but added fun details like giant gold floral hoops, big white balloons with foliage tails, rosemary place settings and some gorgeous silk ribbon on all the bouquets. The couple also had a banner that read “most excellent” above the top table, which we loved because we’re huge geeks!
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I’m inspired daily by my amazing couples, who come to me with all sorts of interesting requests! I also love looking at different artists and fashion designers on instagram, and enjoy mixing it up with different variations on colour palettes with each job. Even if every job we did had the same colours, the flowers available each week are constantly changing with the seasons. There’s always something new and beautiful to experiment with in my designs.
DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY.
The day always starts with a big cup of tea, then when I’m ready I’ll take the dog out for a nice long walk. After that I’ll hit the studio to get some emails and admin done, or head to the flower market to select the flowers for the job I’m working on. I usually order most things in advance but there’s always something gorgeous that I hadn’t considered, so I’ll spend a bit of time choosing the last few stems that will really make the designs pop. After that its back to the studio to get started on creating the floral arrangements, coffee and another walk with doggo in the afternoon and then home to cook up a storm in the kitchen.
WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?
I love walking around the city, and exploring the little hidden gems Glasgow has to offer. There are loads of workshops and cafes hidden away down side streets and lanes that aren’t always apparent from the main road. When I have time, I love to visit the beach too, there’s nothing better than a good stroll along the sand, picking up shells and bits of sea glass and having a peek in the rock pools for beasties. My favourites are Seacliff Beach near North Berwick, and Cullen Beach up on the coast between Inverness and Aberdeen.
FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?
TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON
There’s a big trend for using lots of foliage at the moment (Pantone Colour of the year 2017 was Green!). However I love a bit of colour, so I’m looking forward to using the 2018 colour Ultraviolet in some designs over the next wee while. It’s a blue based purple that could look really cool with some faded lilac and a bit of deep plum for drama, or paired with brighter shades like lime or hot pink for vibrant summer florals.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN
Listen to your gut feelings and don’t be swayed by other people. Your own instincts are pretty good at guiding you in the right direction! My parents always told me to go my own way too; I’m so grateful that they encouraged me to go to art college and become self-employed instead of going down a more traditional route.
