A slick frontman, sick tunes, and killer beats.
Welcome to the wedding band of your DREAMS. Glasgow-based Nick Bruce and His Blinding Lights are here to get rid of your fears about hiring a wedding band. And they’re not doing it quietly – they’re stomping on them with insane rhythm, then blasting ’em away with the funkiest horns you ever did hear. They’re a throwback show band bringing you live quality disco, funk and soul classics, 89s electronica and early 2000s R&B with shedloads of crowd interaction and bucketfuls of improv. They cater for epic weddings when the focus on the music is major, and the presence on the dancefloor is even greater – we have a feeling you’re going to absolutely adore them…
WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?
We’re Nick Bruce and His Blinding Lights, and we’re a funky wedding and functions band based mostly in Glasgow (though our poor horn players are based in Edinburgh). Nick’s originally from Buckie, which is a small fishing village north of Elgin, about an hour outside of Inverness. It’s difficult to cram that information into the half-sung intro to Senorita though, so at that point in the show we sometimes claim that he’s from Memphis, Tennessee.
DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE.
We rehearse at an awesome custom rehearsal space in the south of Glasgow, and we sometimes have vocal arrangement rehearsals in somebody’s car.
WHERE/HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
We met on Gumtree! We’ve all played in different bands, but we never played nearly enough Prince in any of those projects. So – we got together in 2010 and formed what would become Nick Bruce and His Blinding Lights. We played the Hogmanay party at the Blythswood Square Hotel in our debut gig. It was fun!
FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?
Although we’re a cover band, we do our own arrangements of loads of stuff, including medleys etc. We’ve just created and learned a ten minute Justin Timberlake medley that is ridiculously good fun. And we do a mash-up of 24k Magic and Return of the Mack that absolutely kills.
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Great music and great showmanship inspires us. Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Chaka Khan, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, James Brown.
DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY.
A typical gig day involves: driving to the venue and chatting music (which is great), loading in to the venue (which totally sucks), setting up and soundchecking, chatting to the bride and groom and getting warmed up, then obviously the best part is the actual performance. Once we’re on stage, the quicker we can surprise each other the better. Then, we tear down and load out, which sucks even worse than it did coming in as we’re now sweating like mofos.
WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?
I guess since there’s eight of us we don’t really have a good answer to this! We’re all city dwellers though so I guess there’s something to that.
FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?
We’re a showband, so we love venues with a good sized stage and great sound. The Old Fruitmarket, Drygate Brewery and St Luke’s are among our Glasgow favourites – though we also love Sloans even if it’s hot as hell and a bitch of a load-in. It always has a terrific atmosphere.
TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON
I hope to see even more audience participation this season, as always! Got a bridesmaid that sings like a bird? Tell us and we’ll get her up for a bit of Endless Love.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Michael Jackson says “Study the greats, and become greater. Become a scientist, dissect”. Assuming that he didn’t mean that last part literally, that feels like very good advice.
