18 March 2018

EXQUISITE PORTRAITURE, RICH DETAILS, AND RAW EMOTION.

Speaking of raw emotion, we’re getting a bit emotional over here at TWC HQ thanks to Joanna Brown Photography‘s incredible work. Brighton-based wedding and editorial photographer Joanna is a real-life alchemist, able to mix all of the day’s perfections and imperfections into a beautiful package of moments and memories, all caught in the most gorgeous light and without anything starchy or regimented. Working with the day in a relaxed way, and following it as it unfolds, Joanna’s work is nothing short of extraordinary. From detailed frames of delicate fabrics and portrait work of you at your most intimate to the shots of your guests living their best life, Joanna is living hers day in and day out. Throw in this incredible tear-inducing talent alongside the sweetest nature and her loveliest, most calming presence, and you have your perfect wedding ‘tog, don’t you, really?

WHO ARE YOU + WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

I am Joanna, a photographer who lives by the sea in Brighton! It is a creative seaside town which has wall to wall sunshine!

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKPLACE

I work from home. My desk is compact, with the walls around it full of visual inspiration, and my office space is light and airy. I have music on to help ease me through the day and a solar powered rainbow maker to bring a bit of magic to the space.

HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

I picked up a camera whilst doing my A-levels. It progressed to a degree and then my career has been photography related ever since. I have been running my own business for 8 years, and love my job.

FAVOURITE WORK TO DATE?

Outside of weddings it would have to be the editorial/fashion commissions that I am doing…. It is great to have all the lovely dresses, locations and the time for the creativity to be really pushed. I also have the chance to shoot film as there is so much more scope to do that…. I want to shoot more editorial alongside my weddings. It goes without saying that with over 150 weddings shot I can’t pick one that is my favourite. I get to know all my couples and can’t possible pick one over an other as they are all pretty damn perfect in my eyes.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Without sounding a total cliché – my son! He is called Fox, is 3, and I am raising him on my own. He inspires me to look at the world with curiosity, live for the moment, and be whole hearted.

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY.

I am up early with Fox – Breakfast, then dropping off a nursery. I always walk back across the park, get home, make a coffee and start working til 3! Then it is time with Fox until he goes to bed. Evenings are either listening to music, reading, film watching and socialising with friends. I think when you have a child you are super productive as you have designated times for working… I get more done now than ever!

WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO?

Hands down it is the beach, preferably by bike on a summer’s day…

Wintertime I like walks in the woods followed by roaring fire in a pub to warm up.

I love culture too so happy to walk around London getting lost and soaking up culture and food as I go!

FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE?

Hmmm this is a tricky one…I really loved the Barbican and also MC Motors – both London venues.

TRENDS YOU HOPE TO SEE THIS SEASON

I hope to see more structural flowers using off beat palettes and shapes. More natural hair down and clips rather than crowns. Stylish wedding dresses which are a step away from lace…and how about the hat? Big wide brim hats please…Lastly neon! Need I say anymore!

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Go for it, be yourself and play the long game.
